How to Renew Your Nigerian Passport from the USA (2026)
Renewing a Nigerian passport from the USA used to mean taking a day off work, flying or driving to Washington DC, New York, or Atlanta, and hoping the appointment actually happened. That changed in April 2025 when Nigeria launched the NIS Mobile contactless app in the USA, letting eligible Nigerians renew their passport entirely from their phone. As of April 2026, over 15,000 Nigerians worldwide have used the contactless system.
This guide covers both options — the contactless app and in-person renewal — with every fee, document, and processing time verified against official Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) sources as of April 2026. If you're a Nigerian in Houston, LA, Chicago, or anywhere outside the three consulate cities, the contactless app is almost certainly your best option.

Option 1: NIS Mobile Contactless App (Recommended for Most)
Launched in the USA on April 11, 2025, the NIS Mobile app lets eligible Nigerians renew their passport entirely online. No consulate visit, no travel, no in-person biometric appointment. Over 15,000 passports have been processed globally through this system as of September 2025.
Who Qualifies for Contactless Renewal
- Existing Nigerian passport holder due for renewal (not first-time applicants)
- Valid NIN (National Identification Number) — mandatory
- No data corrections needed (no name change, no date of birth correction)
- Currently residing in the USA (also available in Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil)
Not eligible? You'll need to visit one of the three US consulates in person (see Option 2).
How to Use the Contactless App
- Download “NIS Mobile” from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Create an account using your current passport details and NIN.
- Complete the renewal form in the app.
- Pay the booklet fee + $50 admin charge via credit or debit card.
- Complete biometric fingerprint capture using your phone (guided by the app).
- Upload your passport photo meeting NIS specifications (white background, 35mm x 45mm, no smiling).
- Wait for processing. The new passport will be mailed to you.
Known issue (as of Sept 2025):Some users reported OTP delivery failures during payment. Check your email spam folder, and contact NIS support if the OTP doesn't arrive: support@immigration.gov.ng or +234 9121900655.
Option 2: In-Person at a Nigerian Embassy or Consulate
If you're a first-time applicant, need data corrections, or prefer to renew in person, you have exactly THREE options in the USA. There is no Nigerian consulate in Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, or Miami. The OIS offices in other cities handle visas only, not passports.

Texas residents are covered by the Atlanta consulate, not Washington DC. Note this means a drive from Houston to Atlanta, which is why the contactless app is especially valuable for the Texas Nigerian community.
Complete Fee Breakdown (2026)
Important fee discrepancy:NIS's August 2025 official announcement listed diaspora fees at $150 (32-page) and $230 (64-page). However, consulate websites display $142 (32-page, 5-year), $162 (64-page, 5-year), and $242 (64-page, 10-year). The consulate figures are likely the actual checkout amounts. Always verify the exact amount on the consulate website or NIS portal at the time of payment.

The NIN Requirement (Don't Skip This)
Since 2021, the National Identification Number (NIN) has been mandatory for all Nigerian passport applications. If you don't have a NIN, your application will be rejected. This is the #1 blocker for diaspora Nigerians who left before NIN enrollment became widespread.
If you don't have a NIN, you must enroll at a NIMC-approved center. Some US cities have NIN enrollment partners — check the NIMC website or contact your nearest Nigerian mission. Once enrolled, you'll receive your NIN, which you then use for the passport application.
Name match warning: Your NIN name must match your passport application exactly. Any discrepancy (even a missing middle name) can cause delays and may require you to re-enroll at a NIN center.
Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC)
If you need to travel to Nigeria urgently and don't have a valid passport (lost, stolen, or expired with no time to renew), you can apply for an Emergency Travel Certificate. This is a temporary travel document valid for 30 days, one-way to Nigeria only. You cannot use it to return to the USA.
- Fee: $150 (USPS Money Order only)
- Validity: 30 days, one-way to Nigeria
- Required: Application letter to the Consul General, one passport photo, copy of expired/lost passport, police report (if lost/stolen), flight itinerary, self-addressed prepaid next-day envelope
- For minors:Both parents' consent letter, birth certificate, parents' Nigerian passport data pages

How much does Nigerian passport renewal cost from the USA?
The booklet fee ranges from $142 (32-page, 5-year) to $242 (64-page, 10-year), plus a $50 administrative charge. Lost passport penalty is $350–$370 depending on the consulate. Total cost for most adults renewing a standard passport is around $192–$292.
Can I renew my Nigerian passport without visiting a consulate?
Yes. Since April 2025, the NIS Mobile contactless app allows eligible renewals entirely from your phone. You don't need to visit a consulate. The app is only for renewals — first-time applicants and data corrections still require in-person visits.
How long does Nigerian passport renewal take from the USA?
Up to 12 weeks after biometric enrollment. The NY consulate explicitly states this maximum. Apply at least 6 months before your travel date or passport expiry. There is no expedited service.
Is there a Nigerian consulate in Houston or Los Angeles?
No. There are only THREE Nigerian passport-issuing missions in the USA: the Embassy in Washington DC, the Consulate General in New York, and the Consulate General in Atlanta. The OIS offices in other cities handle visas only, not passports. Texas and other states not covered by the three consulates should use the NIS Mobile contactless app.
Do I need a NIN to renew my Nigerian passport?
Yes. NIN (National Identification Number) is mandatory for all applications, including renewals. If you don't have one, enroll at a NIMC-approved center. Your NIN name must match your passport exactly — any mismatch causes delays.

Verification Notes
Fee discrepancy between NIS official announcement ($150/$230) and consulate websites ($142/$162/$242) is unresolved. Recommend verifying exact amount at checkout. Real-world current wait times may differ from stated maximums. NIS Diaspora Outreach mobile biometric program appears to have been replaced by the contactless app.
