Expert tip

EU Blue Card (Skilled Work)

IMPORTANT: Hungary's low-skilled Guest Worker route is NOT open to Nigerians. Since 6 June 2026 no one can apply for a new guest-worker residence permit, because the government has designated no eligible third countries (https://oif.gov.hu/news/the-legislation-on-residence-permits-for-guest-workers-has-been-amended). The realistic work route for Nigerians is the EU Blue Card, for highly qualified professionals. The 2026 salary threshold is HUF 1,001,048/month gross, or HUF 800,838/month for designated shortage and healthcare roles. You need a recognised university degree (or equivalent experience) and a Hungarian job offer above the threshold. The permit/visa fee is ₦175,200 at the Abuja embassy from 1 August 2026. The Blue Card is a path to EU long-term permanent residence after 5 years (Blue Card holders can also apply for the 3-year national residence card). Hungary caps employment and guest-worker permits at 35,000 for 2026, the same as 2025; the cap does not name the Blue Card, but secure the job offer first.

Where Nigerians settle in Hungary

Once your EU Blue Card (Skilled Work) is approved, most Nigerians head to Budapest or Debrecen. Here is what to budget for your first year:

  • Budapest: 1-bedroom rent ₦1,083,742/month · Lagos–Budapest flights from ~$600 · Nigerian community: Small
  • Debrecen: 1-bedroom rent ₦735,231/month · Lagos–Debrecen flights from ~$620 · Nigerian community: Small
  • Szeged: 1-bedroom rent ₦610,151/month · Lagos–Szeged flights from ~$620 · Nigerian community: Very Small

Life in Budapest

Budapest is the capital and has the biggest job market, the most English-taught programmes, and the largest (still small) international community. A 1-bedroom averages around HUF 260,000/month (~$852), more in central districts (V, VI, VII) and cheaper in outer districts (XIII, XI, Újbuda). Public transport is excellent and cheap — a student monthly pass is about HUF 3,450 (~$9). No direct flight from Lagos; connect via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways) or Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc) for roughly $540–700 one-way.

2% of Nigerians who use Japa Calculator choose Hungary as their destination. Average Japa Score: 5.8/10. Most common salary expectation among applicants: ₦300K–₦700K.
