State of Japa 2026 — Q2: The Cost of Leaving Nigeria, Verified
The data Nigerian relocators have been guessing at, now verified against 30+ official sources. 31 countries. ₦543K to ₦31.8M. Every figure traceable to an immigration ministry, a professional body, or a published government fee schedule.
1. Executive summary
We mapped the full all-in cost of relocating from Nigeria to 31 destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, the Gulf, Asia, and Oceania. Every visa fee, proof-of-funds requirement, language test, credential evaluation, and rent figure in this report was verified between 2026-04-30 and 2026-06-03 against the primary official source — immigration ministry fee schedules, professional registration bodies, and published government rates. Where a figure could not be verified, we did not publish it.
Three findings stand out:
- The cheapest credible japa route from Nigeria costs ₦543K — to Rwanda, on a Work Permit. The next cheapest is Ghana at ₦725K via the ECOWAS Free Movement protocol. The cheapest route to a high-income country is the UK Skilled Worker visa at ₦4.6M.
- The United States is now the most expensive destination from Nigeria — up to ₦31.8M (~$23,300) for an H-1B pathway including first-3-months rent in New York City. Cyprus is second at ₦31.7M (driven by EU student visa proof-of-funds requirements), Spain at ₦25.9M, and Portugal at ₦25.8M.
- Profession is the single largest variable in real japa cost. A Nigerian nurse can be in the UK on an NHS Band 5 contract for ₦2.9–5M and recoup the full cost in under one month of UK salary. A Nigerian pharmacist faces ₦22–42M in pre-licensure costs and recoups in ~7 months.
Methodology in one line: All FX rates locked at 2026-06-02 via open.er-api.com. All visa, immigration, and professional-body fees verified against the official URLs listed in our public verification-manifest.json.
2. The cost of japa — country rankings
Headline:Across 31 verified destinations, the cost of relocating from Nigeria ranges from ₦543,367 to ₦31,787,176 — a 58× spread.
2.1 Top 5 cheapest destinations from Nigeria
| # | Country | Cost (NGN) | Cost (USD) | Primary visa | Processing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rwanda | ₦543K – ₦3.1M | $398 – $2,290 | Work Permit (Class A) | 2–4 weeks |
| 2 | Turkey | ₦594K – ₦10.4M | $435 – $7,615 | Türkiye Bursları Scholarship | Apply Jan–Feb; results mid-year |
| 3 | Ghana | ₦725K – ₦4.1M | $532 – $2,984 | Work Permit (ECOWAS) | 4–8 weeks |
| 4 | Egypt | ₦1.3M – ₦7.9M | $944 – $5,771 | Tourist Visa (Preapproval) | 10–15 business days |
| 5 | Qatar | ₦1.9M – ₦13.1M | $1,374 – $9,615 | Employer-Sponsored Work Visa | 2–3 months |
Key insight: Three of the five cheapest destinations are within Africa, and the only sub-₦1M route is Rwanda (Work Permit) — where the employer typically arranges accommodation, suppressing the rent line. Qatar makes the top 5 not because it is cheap but because the employer pays the visa fee outright— the Nigerian relocator’s exposure is largely flight + first-month rent.
2.2 Top 5 most expensive destinations from Nigeria
| # | Country | Cost (NGN) | Cost (USD) | Primary visa | Why it costs this much |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | United States | ₦6.8M – ₦31.8M | $5,000 – $23,300 | H-1B Specialty Occupation | NYC rent + H-1B fee stack ($3,380) |
| 2 | Cyprus | ₦12.7M – ₦31.7M | $9,304 – $23,260 | Student Visa (Pink Slip) | €7,000 proof of funds + private tuition |
| 3 | Spain | ₦5.1M – ₦25.9M | $3,733 – $18,984 | Schengen Tourist (Short-Stay) | €2,850/month income req on DN visa |
| 4 | Portugal | ₦3.6M – ₦25.8M | $2,667 – $18,877 | D7 Passive Income Visa | Annual passive income req + Lisbon rent |
| 5 | France | ₦8.0M – ₦24.0M | $5,866 – $17,598 | Campus France Student (VLS-TS) | €615/month proof of funds + Paris rent |
The US gap is real and growing. USCIS raised the H-1B fee stack in 2026 (fraud fee $460 → $500, ACWIA $1,070 → $1,500). Combined with New York City 1-bed rents that re-verified at $2,380/month (up from our 2024 $1,584 baseline — a 50% correction we caught in the 2026-06-02 sweep), the US is the only destination where total cost crosses ₦30M.
2.3 Best value: cost vs. quality-of-life
Best value here is measured as ((Safety + Healthcare) ÷ 2 × 100) ÷ low-cost-NGN-in-millions. Safety and healthcare are scored 1–10 (Safety: Numbeo Safety Index proxy; Healthcare: WHO/Bloomberg ranking proxy — see js/data.js). Higher score = better quality per Naira.
| # | Country | Cost-low (NGN) | Safety /10 | Healthcare /10 | Value score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Portugal | ₦3.6M | 9 | 7 | 220 |
| 2 | Sweden | ₦4.2M | 7 | 8 | 180 |
| 3 | Netherlands | ₦3.9M | 8 | 8 | 204 |
| 4 | Ireland | ₦4.7M | 9 | 7 | 172 |
| 5 | Germany | ₦4.8M | 8 | 8 | 167 |
Portugal is the verified value leader for Nigerians seeking high-safety, high-healthcare destinations on the lowest cost tier. It is the only country in our top 5 value bracket scoring 9/10 on safety. The trade-off is processing time — the D7 visa runs 60–90 days for the visa, followed by 4–6 months for the residence permit via AIMA, the longest residence-permit lag among Schengen-zone Nigerian options we tracked.
3. Profession-specific routes — where the real ROI is
Headline: A Nigerian nurse with NMC OSCE clearance can be in the UK on Band 5 within ~12 months and recoup the full ₦2.9–5M relocation cost in under a month of NHS salary.
The visa-and-flight number is the easy part. The real cost variable for a working Nigerian relocator is their profession-specific registration pathway — IELTS, OSCE, PLAB, ACS, WES, ACCA, GMC, NMC. We have built and verified profession-specific guides for the 10 highest-volume routes. The table below is the headline result: how many months of entry-level salary in the destination country it takes to recoup the high end of the relocation cost.
| # | Profession | Country | Cost (NGN) | Entry salary | Months to recoup | Migration volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Registered Nurse | UK | ₦2.9M – ₦5.0M | £32,073 (NHS Band 5) | 1 | 14,815+ since 2017 (3rd-largest source) |
| 2 | Engineer | Canada | ₦5.8M – ₦8.0M | CAD $87,000 | 1.1 | 91,500 (TEER 1 STEM priority) |
| 3 | Registered Nurse | Canada | ₦3.5M – ₦7.0M | CAD $60,320 (Ontario RN) | 1.4 | 21,000+ (Priority Express Entry) |
| 4 | Accountant (ACCA) | UK | ₦7.5M – ₦9.5M | £45,000 | 1.4 | 750K+ Nigerian-British community |
| 5 | Software Developer | Canada | ₦3.5M – ₦7.5M | CAD $62,400 | 1.5 | 13,000+ (TEER 1 priority) |
| 6 | Software Developer | UK | ₦4.0M – ₦9.0M | £35,000 | 1.7 | 52,000 (2nd-largest source) |
| 7 | Doctor | UK | ₦6.0M – ₦10.0M | £36,616 (NHS FY1) | 1.8 | 4,193 (66% headed to UK) |
| 8 | Teacher | UK | ₦7.0M – ₦9.5M | £31,650 (M1 starting) | 2 | 5,230 (+28% YoY) |
| 9 | Doctor | Canada | ₦9.0M – ₦16.0M | CAD $73,367 (Ontario PGY1) | 2.7 | 934 (2nd destination after UK) |
| 10 | Pharmacist | UK | ₦22.0M – ₦42.0M | £39,959 (NHS Band 6) | 6.9 | 56,845 (Nigeria named as major source) |
The pharmacist outlier explained: The UK GPhC registration pathway requires a Foundation Training Year (£14K+ in salary forgone vs cost) plus the OSPAP postgrad diploma (~£15K) plus registration fees — together easily ₦40M before the first NHS payslip. We list it because most public japa cost guides treat all healthcare professions as a single category and undercount the pharmacist line by 4–10×.
4. The verification story — and why most online japa cost guides are stale
Headline: We are the only Nigerian japa cost source with a public verification manifest and pre-commit hooks that block stale data from shipping.
Most online japa cost figures Nigerians find via Google are out of date by 18+ months. The ones in PDFs from agencies are worse — usually 3+ years stale, with no source attribution. This matters because immigration fees are not stable. Three live examples from our 2026-06-02 sweep:
- UK Skilled Worker visa: £769 → £819 (effective 8 April 2026). 6.5% increase.
- Canada IRCC Express Entry: $850 → $950 (effective 30 April 2026), RPRF $515 → $575.
- USCIS H-1B fee stack: fraud fee $460 → $500, ACWIA $1,070 → $1,500, asylum surcharge $1,285 → $600. Net change: $3,595 → $3,380 (a decrease hidden inside increases).
- Mauritius Premium Visa: widely reported as $50/year. It is free. A $50 processing fee was added from December 2025. We were the first Nigerian source to publish this verification.
- New Zealand NZQA evaluation: NZD $445 → NZD $746 (~67% increase). Most online guides still cite the pre-2025 figure.
Our verification protocol
- Load
pseo/data/country-facts.json— the single source of truth. - Web-search every official source URL for the country.
- Diff against the published value. If changed, update
country-facts.jsonfirst. - For any new fact needed: web-search → verify → log source URL in
country-facts.json. - Cross-check every figure in the article against
country-facts.jsonandrelocation-db.json. - Update
verification-manifest.jsonwithverified_at,verified_by,source_urls,notes. - Pre-commit hook (
scripts/validate-data.js) blocks the commit if freshness or source coverage fails.
This is the discipline that separates verified data from accumulated rumour.
5. Pricing reform highlights — what changed in 2026

6. Methodology + sources
Total cost range for each country is the sum of: visa application fee + proof-of-funds amount (where required) + health surcharge + language test + credential evaluation + cheapest one-way Lagos economy flight + first 3 months rent in the cheapest sampled city. All values are stored in local currency in relocation-db.json and converted to NGN and USD at the locked FX rate.
Exchange rates are locked at the 2026-06-02 daily rate from open.er-api.com. Quality-of-life proxy (Section 2.3) is the simple mean of Safety (1–10) and Healthcare (1–10), scored from js/data.js. Profession-specific costs and salaries (Section 3) come from pseo/data/professions-db.json.

Founder
Max Ayobami built Japa Calculator after watching too many Nigerian relocators make life-changing decisions on figures from outdated WhatsApp forwards. He is based in Lagos. Reach him at max@japacalculator.com or via japacalculator.com.

Frequently asked questions
- Who funded or commissioned this report?
- No one. Japa Calculator is bootstrapped and independent. The report is published as a free quarterly resource for Nigerian relocators, journalists, policy researchers, and anyone evaluating japa decisions. We make money via affiliate partnerships disclosed on japacalculator.com.
- How current are the figures in this report?
- Every country in this report was verified against its primary official source between 2026-04-30 and 2026-06-03. The verification date for each country is logged in our public verification-manifest.json. The next quarterly update ships 2026-09-01.
- Can I cite figures from this report in journalism, policy work, or academic research?
- Yes — please cite as: 'Japa Calculator, State of Japa 2026 Q2, published 2026-06-03, https://japacalculator.com/state-of-japa-2026-q2/'. We commit to correcting any verifiable error within 72 hours of receipt at max@japacalculator.com.
- Why is the United States the most expensive japa destination?
- USCIS raised the H-1B fee stack in 2026 (fraud fee $460 → $500, ACWIA $1,070 → $1,500), and our 2026-06-02 sweep re-verified New York City 1-bed rents at $2,380/month (up 50% from our 2024 baseline of $1,584). The combined visa + flight + first-3-months rent for NYC crosses ₦30M, making the US the only destination in this band.
- Why is the cheapest route to Rwanda only ₦543K when other African destinations are higher?
- The Rwanda Work Permit assumes employer-arranged accommodation, suppressing the rent line. Cape Verde, Kenya, Ghana, and Egypt all show higher floor figures because we computed first-3-months rent at expat-standard 1-bed rates. The Rwanda figure is honest — it is the only route in this report where the employer typically handles housing — but it should not be read as 'Rwanda is universally cheaper than Ghana.'
- Why are Numbeo rents flagged for some countries?
- Numbeo bot-walled our automated agents during the 2026-06-02 sweep. We chose to flag the affected countries in verification-manifest.json rather than carry forward stale figures. Those rents will be re-verified manually before the Q3 report.
